Owning a Ragdoll
Ragdoll cats are one of the most popular cat breeds in the world. They are known for their gentle, laid-back temperament, striking blue eyes, and beautiful semi-long coats. Here is what you need to know about owning a Ragdoll.
Temperament
Ragdolls are known for their docile, calm, and affectionate nature. They tend to go limp when picked up — which is how they got their name. They are very people-oriented and will often follow their owners from room to room. They get along well with children, dogs, and other cats, making them an ideal family pet.
Indoor-Only Cats
Ragdolls should be kept as indoor-only cats. Their trusting, gentle nature makes them vulnerable outdoors — they do not have strong self-preservation instincts and may not defend themselves against other animals or recognize danger. A safe, enriched indoor environment is the best home for a Ragdoll.
Grooming
Ragdolls have a semi-long, silky coat that is relatively easy to maintain compared to other long-haired breeds. Their fur does not mat as easily because it lacks a dense undercoat. Brushing two to three times per week will keep their coat looking beautiful and reduce shedding. Regular nail trims and ear cleaning are also recommended.
Health
Ragdolls are generally a healthy breed, but they can be predisposed to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a form of heart disease, and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Reputable breeders health-test their breeding cats for both conditions. All Blue Lion kittens come from HCM- and PKD-tested parents.
Diet & Nutrition
A high-quality diet is important for your Ragdoll's health and coat condition. We recommend a combination of high-quality dry kibble and wet food. Fresh water should always be available. Ragdolls can be prone to obesity, so monitor portion sizes and avoid overfeeding treats.
Litter Box

Enrichment & Play
Although Ragdolls are calm, they still enjoy playtime and mental stimulation. Cat trees, window perches, interactive toys, and puzzle feeders are all great ways to keep your Ragdoll happy and healthy. They enjoy playing fetch and learning simple tricks. Veterinary Care
Schedule a vet visit within the first few days of bringing your kitten home. Annual wellness exams, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are essential. We recommend spaying or neutering pet kittens by six months of age. Dental cleanings may be needed as your cat ages.
